Captured on camera: solo ocean racing pt2
Sunday February 10th 2002, Author: James Boyd, Location: United Kingdom
The 1988 C-STAR had 95 starters, including some interesting names. The white trimaran, one ahead from the red-hulled trimaran on the right of the picture below was
Holsten Ocean Surfer, sailed by none other than
Assa Abloy navigator Mark Rudiger. Mike Birch was forced to retire when he ran over a whale in his trimaran
Fujicolor, but true to form he sailed his stricken boat back to La Trinite-sur-Mer with the main hull awash. Both Chay Blyth and Robin Knox-Johnston also retired from the race.
Among the fleet was a Royal Marine, Pete Goss, who was making his catamaran debut. Goss successfully made the crossing aboard the lightweight 26ft Firebird catamaran Cornish Meadow finishing second overall in his class. Racing against Goss was another multihull sailor Mike Golding aboard the 28ft trimaran Gazelle.
