Those with a keen eye will notice that while the 1986 Route du Rhum was predominantly large catamarans, the 1990 entry list was predominantly smaller trimarans, following the rule changes in the class.
Florence Arthaud's Pierre 1er in her golden regalia was a Marc van Peteghem/Vincent Lauriot Prevost design. She was subsequently bought and campaigned heavily by Steve Fossett and most recently was raced by Emma Richard and Mikaela von Koskull in last year's Transat Jacques Vabre.
Against some serious male competition, Arthaud was first into Pointe a Pitre, Guadeloupe, giving the French press a story the likes of which they hadn't seen since the Birch-Malinovsky match race to the finish line in 1978.
