Once you have won the BOC Challenge twice, what lies in store for a singlehanded round the world sailor? Philippe Jeantot thought that a singlehanded race non-stop round the world was required and set up the first Vendee Globe Challenge which ran in 1989/90. The winner of this inaugrial event was the artist and visionary Tituoan Lamazou aboard
Ecureuil d'Aquitaine II
Lamazou had already taken part in the BOC Challenge prior to his win in the Vendee. His next venture, the giant monohull TAG Heuer built for the Jules Verne Trophy was less successful and all but broke up due a severe case of delamination in early sea trials. For many years she could be seen looking in a sorry state on the hard next to where the ferry docks in Cherbourg.
Despite organising the race, Philippe Jeantot could not resist taking part on board his new Marc Lombard designed Open 60, Credit Agricole IV.
