Captured on camera: solo ocean racing pt2
Sunday February 10th 2002, Author: James Boyd, Location: United Kingdom
During the 1990s two very remarkable individuals dominated the 60ft trimaran class. One was Loick Peyron who succeeded in repeating Eric Tabarly's performance, by winning the OSTAR on two successive occasions.
The second was Peyron's arch-rival the French-Swiss sailor Laurent Bourgnon. Aside from winning the 1994 Route du Rhum, Bourgnon's most incredible passage came in June 1994 when attempting to set a new singlehanded record across the Atlantic from New York to the Lizard. Bourgnon broke the passage record setting a new record time of 7 days 2 hours and 34 minutes (at an average of 17.15 knots). In the process he also set a new outright 24 hour passage record (faster than any crewed boats) of 540 miles.
