Defending the Cup

In the fall of 1999 and until the first America's Cup race, there was a very strong lobby inside the Louis Vuitton media center against a possible second victory from Team New Zealand.

But in fact few had seen at close distance how the two Kiwis boats had been fighting fiercely against each other since 1997 in the Hauraki Gulf.

On that day this photo was taken, the two boats racing downwind were so close that they looked like a schooner! The challengers got some races of this type, but the two Black Magic boats had hundred of them under their belts!
