Captured on camera: solo ocean racing pt2
Sunday February 10th 2002, Author: James Boyd, Location: United Kingdom
Aside from Philippe Jeantot, the 1984 OSTAR included some other stiff competition from France in the form of the heavily funded Marc Pajot, subsequently France's America's Cup skipper, Eric Tabarly, Bruno Peyron, his younger brother Loick, Karine Fauconnier's father Yvon and Philippe Poupon. British hopes were pinned on Geoff Houlgrave who had taken over as skipper of
Colt Cars GB following the loss of Rob James, and Exeter policeman Peter Phillips on the new John Shuttleworth 60ft trimaran
Travacrest Seaway(see below).
While during the race Colt Cars GB was dismasted and abandoned, Phillips took the lead in the closing stages but was knocked back into fourth place. It was a controversial finish - although Philippe Poupon was first across the line, the race in the end went to fellow countryman Yvon Fauconnier who was awarded a 16 hour time allowance after he had stopped to rescue Jeantot whose catamaran had capsized.
