Gilbert and Dunn lead

After day three of the RS400 Nationals

Wednesday September 10th 2003, Author: Heather Chipperfield, Location: United Kingdom
The fleet were greeted with a shifty, offshore, north westerly that was force 3 to 4 in strength on day three of the RS400 Nationals. The sea state was relatively smooth and was in stark contrast to the start of the previous day. The shifty breeze provided challenging tactical sailing conditions both upwind and downwind.

The Freeman brothers as pathfinders got the race 5 underway. Roger Giblets and Steve Dunn had the pace and found all the right shifts to lead at the first mark. They proceeded in this manner right through to the finish and took the bullet. Phil Jackson and Gerard Baron had a good start and arrived second at the windward mark with Chris Jennings and Ed Nicklin in close pursuit. Jennings and Nicklin remained at the front and had a hard battle with both Nick Craig/Keith Bedborough and Stuart Hudson/Adam Heeley to finish fourth, third and second respectively. Craig Burlton and Andrew Bonsey made the best of an average start to power through the fleet to finish fifth.

For the second race of the day, the race officer, Barry Darlington, set a larger course for Race 6. RS Rules Representative, David Shiel and crewman, Paul Heath, kicked off the race as pathfinder. A shifty first beat was once again mastered by Giblets/Dunn who rounded first followed by a tight bunch including Hudson/Heeley and the Freeman brothers. Jennings/Nicklin later joined the leaders by taking the right shifts to finish second behind the dominating Gilbert and Dunn. Hudson/Heeley and the Freeman brothers maintained their presence at the front to finish third and fourth respectively.

Day three provided the fleet with some great racing and it was a tired and happy fleet that returned ashore to the kind and warm hospitality of Looe Sailing Club.
