Thomas Coville and Sodebo are now firmly into what would be third place in the Barcelona World Race and while Virbac Paprec 3 is now at 5°S compared to Sodebo's 15°S, it must be with some satisfaction that Coville has been pulling up through their fleet sailing singlehanded, albeit in a boat nearly twice the size of the IMOCA 60s and with trice the number of hulls.
With Sodebo having to put in a tack to the northeast over the course of yesterday to order to get some searoom from the Brazilian coast, so Coville has been fortunate that so far he has managed to maintain his hard earned lead over the comparible pace of Francis Joyon and IDEC. At 0100 this morning Coville tacked back on to starboard, but while the northerly wind meant that yesterday's port tack offshore wasn't as painful as it might have been, compared to Sodebo, IDEC was much more lifted at this point of her voyage and was able to lay a course allowing her to pass Recife. Since she tacked Sodebo has been on a course for Salvador and Coville is likely to have to put in at least two further tacks until he is adequately east enough and in easterly breeze in order to get past the easterly bulge in Brazil. This lies some 270 miles to due north of her present position. The upshot is that in 24 hour time Coville is likely to be back to being neck and neck with his virtual rival.
