Malbon on the telly
Monday December 22nd 2008, Author: James Boyd, Location: United Kingdom
Man On A Mission is a revealing two-part documentary which goes behind the scenes with Jonny Malbon for the two year build up to the Vendée Globe. From the highs of his first race as skipper of Artemis Ocean Racing, the lows when he misses out on a vital qualification race for the Vendée Globe, to the emotional final moments when Malbon and his girlfriend kiss goodbye on the docks in Les Sables D’Olonne.
And Jonny Malbon, who has many thousands of miles of experience at sea, but has never raced alone, begins the greatest challenge of his life and sails off into the unknown.
While 12 of the 30 strong fleet have been forced to retire. Of the seven British skippers who started the race, two have withdrawn.
But Britain’s Jonny Malbon is still out there, battling against the elements. He is on course to spend Christmas alone on his IMOCA 60 race yacht Artemis Ocean Racing II, on the icy waters of the Southern Ocean between Antarctica and Australia.
Christmas Day will be no different to any of the three months he expects to be at sea. Sleep will be grabbed in burst of a few minutes, food will be freeze dried and he will be concentrating on keeping himself safe and his boat fast.
Every day is a constant challenge. But challenge is something that Malbon is used to, as over the last two years his life has been focused on just one thing. To compete in this race. And he has overcome every challenge, every obstacle that has been in his way, and there have been many, to make the start.
