Shetland Islands Council returns to support Royal Western YC's famous doublehanded race

Shetland Islands Council has once again taken on the role of title sponsor of the Round Britain and Ireland (RB&I) race. This announcement comes exactly 12 months before the official race start of the Royal Western Yacht Club's classic doublehanded race.

This is the second time the Council has sponsored the notoriously difficult clockwise lap of the British isles with stops. The race itself departs from Plymouth, on 6 June 2010, and has been laid on by the Royal Western Yacht Club every four years since 1966. A number of sailing greats have taken part, including Pete Goss MBE and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.

Shetland is the ideal sponsor of the race as its largest town, Lerwick, is one of the four stops during the race. With 900 miles of striking coastline, and 35 marinas and berthing places, Shetland provides the ideal destination for sailors and yachtsmen.

Douglas Irvine, Business Development Manager for Shetland Islands Council, commented: “We supported the RB&I in 2006 and found it to be a great way to introduce sailors to the delights of the Shetland Islands. We are thrilled to be a part of it again and look forward to welcoming the competitors to the island with a real Shetland welcome!”

Peter Taylor, Race Director of RB&I 2010, added: “Shetland Islands Council is a great fit with the race and we are delighted to welcome them onboard once again as title sponsor. The RWYC has hosted this race for more than 40 years and this is its twelfth edition. This is a tough race and the competitors have to be prepared for some very testing conditions. Entries will be limited to 50 boats so competitors should get in touch as soon as possible.”

The Round Britain and Ireland 2010 race will see its official launch at the Southampton Boat Show this September. Competitors interested in taking part can submit their entries immediately. Deadline for entries is 31st January 2010.
