Marten 49 takes Myth of Malham

55 yachts take on RORC's 140 mile dash to Brittany

Starting under a grey and murky sky, in a cold North Westerly 3 – 4 the RORC fleet of 55 yachts set off from the Royal Yacht Squadron line on Saturday 26th May at 08:30 for Classes 2 & 3 and 08:40 for Classes Super Zero, Zero & 1.

All classes were away on time and lines were clear, No Fear, Robert Stanton’s Sigma 38 leading Athena, Stephen Bromley’s IMX 38 at the first gun and Yani, Bob Swann’s Marten 49 and Playing Around, Peter Robson’s First 40.7 getting good starts for the second.

The course sent the fleet West out of the Solent via the Needles, then across the Channel leaving Casquettes and Guernsey to port and thence to the finish off St Quay Portrieux on the Brittany coast to the south west of the Channel Islands - a distance of approximately 160 Nm.

The wind was forecast to back to the west and then South-West. For the faster boats this would not be of too much concern as they were able to keep ahead of the shift. However, those behind found themselves beating into the foul tide.

A number of yachts made the decision to retire and head for home on the way across to avoid the strong gales forecast to hit the area on Sunday evening. Others crossed the finishing line and headed straight home for the same reason.

Yani lead the fleet to the line outside the harbour at St Quay Portrieux, finishing at 00:11:27 on Sunday morning and just far enough ahead of the chasing pack to lift the Myth of Malham Cup for BCT IRC, but only by 58 seconds from Class 1 Pen Azen, Philippe Delaporte’s J/122.

First of Class 2 to finish was Atao, Loic de Courlon’s J/105 at 04:23:17 followed by Foggy Dew, Noel Racine’s JPK 9.60 ten minutes later. On corrected time Foggy Dewhad done enough to take the Class win.

First home in Class 3 was Mefisto, the Sigma 38 of Kevin Sussmilch, ahead of the X 332 X-to-Sea, owned by David Hunt, with Mefistowinning the Class on handicap.

The Class 2 the Grand Soleil Earendil, owned by Pierre Caillault was the winner in the 2 Handed Division.

There was a steady stream of yachts passing through finish throughout the early morning keeping the finish team on the committee boat busy trying to identify sail numbers in the dark and the heavy rain.

The RORC would like to thank the Cercle de la Voile de Portrieux, especially Philippe Delaporte, Mathieu and Annick Tanon and Alain and Marie Helene Scheidecker, the owners of Vegada, the finish line committee boat, for their kind hospitality and support to the RORC Team and all competitors.

A prizegiving took place at the Cercle de la Voile de Portrieux at 12:30 local time where the Trophies were presented. RORC Medallions will be presented on Tuesday 19th June at 19:30 at the Clubhouse, 20 St James’s Place, London SW1.
