Yesterday saw the third multihull capsize in the severe conditions the mid and back end of the fleet have been experiencing. Long term multihull skipper Pascal Quintin on his class two trimaran Jean Stalaven, capsized at 16:40GMT 800 miles WSW of the Azores. Having set off his distress beacons, he was rescued from his upturned hull at midnight GMT last night by the Pudu bulk carrier.

in the Open 60s class race leader Roland Jourdain on board Sill et Veolia is rapidly closing on the finish line. At the latest position report Bilou had just 309 miles left to sail and a comfortable 101 mile advantage over his old friend and rival Jean le Cam on board VM Materiaux. Jourdain's position is looking comfortable and if he pulls this off it will represent the most major win of his career to date and payback for the keel troubles that forced him to retire from the last Vendee Globe. His ETA at the finish line is tomorrow morning GMT.

Overnight positions have remained fairly stable between the Open 60s, all laying the course and drag racing to the finish line in 20-25 knot easterlies with speeds averaging 11.3 to 17 knots. The finish order is now set the only likely contention could be between Jean-Pierre Dick on Virbac-Paprec who has regained third place from Dominique Wavre's Temenos, just 15 imles separating the boats this morning. Behind them Armel le Cleac'h on Brit Air is currently reecording the highest speed of the boats - having averaged 17 knots for the last 4 hours.

In the class 40s, Gildas Morvan on Oyster Funds is back on the map and as we suspected last night, he has closed to within 95 miles of genniker-less class leader Phil Sharp. However Sharp's position is some 175 miles WNW of Morvan and this will mean he is subject to a different weather phase to the Figaro veteran.

While the boats are curerntly enjoying brisk northeasterly, the forecast indicates there to be more breeze on Morvan's side of the course and this is born out by him having average 10.1 knots to Sharp's 7.1 over the last four hours. Longer term the cards are also likely to fall Morvan's way due to the development of an intense depression tomorrow over Newfoundland, the influence of which will be felt as far south as the boats are now. Sharp will be first to come under the influence of this, and tomorrow afternoon will see him hard on the wind in 25 knots... The forecast indicated that Morvan will get more of a light patch before he too finds himself hard on the wind come tomorrow night. Nice.

Meanwhile the boats to the north are finally reaping the benefits of having seven bells knocked out of them 24-48 hours ago. Moving up to third place is Olivier Rabine in his Jumbo 40 IXSEA, with Ian Munslow on Bollands Mill jumping up to fifth place further north still (Nick Bubb has been forced to retire with a broken boom). The latest sched shows him just 15 miles astern of Damien Grimont's Chocolats Monbana, however by tomorrow night Munslow too will be hard on the wind. The loser meanwhile have been the boats to the south, most notably Dominique Vittet's ATAO Audio System, now down to sixth.
