The Notice of Race for the Rolex Transatlantic Challenge 2005 is now available online ( click here to open it) and as a hard-copy colour commemorative from the New York Yacht Club’s Sailing Office.

The race is for monohull sailboats of 70ft LOD (length on deck) and longer attempting to break the world's oldest ocean-racing record - that of the three-masted schooner Atlantic . The 3,000-mile race starts in New York on 21 May, 2005, and finishes off the Lizard in England, covering the same race course followed by helmsman Charlie Barr - th Russell Coutts of his day - and Atlantic 100 years ago.

After passing through the Lizard-finish gate, yachts will continue racing to a second finish line, located at the Needles Fairway buoy, off the Isle of Wight. This adds about 142 nautical miles to the distance to the Lizard, bringing the total race distance to about 3,142 nm.

The record for the Rolex Transatlantic Challenge 2005 is recognised by the World Sailing Speed Record Council and is included in its list of Ocean Race Records. The race, expected to attract many of the world’s largest sailing yachts, some 200 feet (61m) and longer, will be run by the New York Yacht Club with the cooperation of England's Royal Yacht Squadron.
