Mini Transat update

James Bird arrives - plus overall results for both classes

James Bird, the youngest British competitor ever in the Mini Transat and the youngest competitor in this, the 2003 edition, arrived safely in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. at 03:43:39 (GMT), Tuesday 21st October.

Other competitors to arrive today haave included local Brazilian sailor Gustavo Pacheco. His arrival prompted a visit from the Head of State in Salvador de Bahia and a frenzy of Atabaque drums.

"I’ve been dreaming of this Transat for 20 years, virtually since the first event," said an overjoyed Pacheco. "Though I’m tired, it was long and I missed my family, the hardest part was the search for a sponsor prior to the start. I’m happy that it’s over. Other than a damaged helm after 20 miles which forced me to return to La Rochelle, I didn’t have any other worries. The most difficult thing to handle was the sleep. All I want now is to drink, eat and sleep..."

Isabelle Magois on Eden Park arrived with her left arm in a sling: "I’ve got a big abscess
due to cuts and bruises and rubbing. I can’t use it anymore. The doctor’s put me on antibiotics. And I haven’t had any power for six days, so I was helming endlessly. The day before the finish I was overcome with fatigue. I slept for five hours but my boat kept on the right course. I’m pleased it’s over."

Israeli competitor Daniel Schaffer on Sensil, described some of the carnage his boat had endured. "I broke my rudder blade, the bowsprit and the mast buckled. Apart from that I am happy, I’ve finished."

It was a similar story for Stéphane Ayrault on Wyeth: "I had a fair amount of breakage. Two days after the start the rudder gave way. Then part of my mast broke and it took me 30 hours to repair it and I had to make a 36 hour stopover in Mindello. Two days
after that the pilot gave up the ghost and I had to helm a lot later. Morally it was sometimes hard not to really be in the race, but finishing under
sunny skies I have put it all behind me."
