Rainbow knocked off top spot
Wednesday September 24th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: France
The long leg of the Mumm 30 class' Courses des Iles race from Calvi to Marseilles was cut short this morning due to several conditions brought about by strong Mistral winds. After a miserable night sailing on port tack upwind into 25 knots westerlies the offshore race was instead finished in the Porquerolles islands.
Leader of this highly scoring leg was Dimitri Deruelle on board Marseilles-Cape Sport, who has now taken over the lead from German Bent Deitrich's team on Rainbow that includes Brits such as Andy Green and Miranda Merron. After several impeccible coastal races the offshore race didn't quite go according to plan for the Raindow team who arrived in the Porquerolles in seventh place, knocking them off the top spot overall.
Three boats retired from the leg - two with gear failure. However Diarmuid Foley's Irish team on Mammy were caught red handed sailing into a French militarized zone and were obliged to retire as well.
There is still a long way to go - racing does not conclude in Marseilles until Saturday afternoon.
