Alegre still ahead as wind is slow to fill in at the Regate Pirelli Coppa Carlo Negri

Friday May 1st 2009, Author: Umberta Croce, Location: United Kingdom
Day two of Regate Pirelli Coppa Carlo Negri, organised by Yacht Club Italiano in conjunction with the Circolo Velico di Santa Margherita Ligure, was sailed under sunny skies but in unstable winds.

The 139 boats left the dock at 10:30 but the wind was weak and forced the competitors racers to endure a long wait.

The race committee tried several times to get racing underway in the Gulfo Marconi, but only at around 1500 did the wind build from the west and settle at around 6 knots, allowing racing to get started.

The larger boats today competed on a longer course, around a buoy off Portofino lighthouse, while the rest of the fleet raced in the Gulf of Tigullio.

For the International Maxi Association Group (combining the IRC Mini Maxis, Swan maxis and Wallys), today saw another convincing win for Niklas Zennstrom's Ran 2, correcting out to almost four minutes ahead of Andy Sorriano's Alegre, followed by American Hap Fauth's Bella Mente and Luna Rossa ( Container is not sailing this regatta). With a 1-2 scoreline it is that is leading overall from Ran 2.

My Song was first in the Maxi cruiser racers while Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones' Magic Carpet is the leading Wally.

In IRC Group A, the leader is Tony Buckingham's Mills 40, Ngoni ahead of Roberto Maffini's QQ7 and Paolo Bonetto's Sydney 39, Sir Biss.
