Andrew Hurst's F31R lines up against the mighty SeaCart at the Royal Southampton YC Winter Series

The third race of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club’s Winter series was held today. The race committee then ran a second race to make up for the first day of the series when there was no race due to lack of wind. There was a light westerly breeze which increased for the second race.

The Race Management Team set the Committee Boat on the Netley shore. The race saw the debut in Royal Southampton racing of Helena Darvelid and Paul Larsen’s Marstrom-built Seacart 30 trimaran. This all carbon fibre trimaran claims an all-up sailing weight of 830kg giving a TCF of 1.667.

The first race (Race 3) started at 1010 and was held in light winds with a three lap windward-leeward course. The Seacart 30 helmed by James Stewart was soon in the lead followed by Andrew Hurst’s Corsair F31R Tikatoo. Roo pulled up to third on the water while Force X successfully fended off Scooby III by a margin of 16 seconds on corrected time.

Tikatoo won on corrected time by over three minutes from Roo with Force X third.

The second Race of the day (officially known as re-sailed Winter Series Race 1) saw Force X causing excitement at the Committee Boat end by pointing too high just before the start, stalling to leeward of Roo and falling off on to port tack. There was more breeze and the Seacart was speeding upwind and the conditions were more to Roo’s liking. The course set gave two beats, the two offwind legs were starboard reaches and a close fetch to the finish which suited the Seacart as it took just under 28 minutes to complete the course. Roo was second to finish and took victory on corrected time.
