Bangor Week latest

Fleet travels to Carrickfergus

Thursday July 17th 2003, Author: Event Press, Location: United Kingdom
Over seventy boats sailed to Carrickfergus yesterday in glorious sunshine for the Castle Race on day three of Bangor Week 2003. The boats left Bangor Marina for an earlier than usual start and sailed in light winds on a course for Carrickfergus Marina and Yacht Club. The race is a new addition to Bangor Week and is sponsored by Dubarry of Ireland.

There were a few new yachts featuring in the prizes and a few disappointed sailors who had featured in the top three earlier in the week.

Notably, in Class One, Azure took the top slot with Bob Stewart’s Bateleur in second place. Tom and Diane Andrews from Strangford Lough were once again third having put in a very consistent performance this week.

Turbulent Flo has also been consistent and once again won Class Two with local boat Avocet in second place and gaining equal points overall with Megaera who was third.
Class Three saw Mike Craine having his first win of the week in Full Circle and giving him first place overall in the class in front of Lisa Waugh in Starlet.

Spindrift has had a great set of results to date but fared a disappointing eight place in Race Five. Big Brother however were delighted with first place and celebrated their win in the sunny surroundings of Carrick Yacht Club.

Blue Squirrel also celebrated their first win to-day and donned their sponsors shirts post racing as they arrived by RIB at Carrick Marina.

Stephen and June McMinn in L’Eau Life are now well in the lead in Class Six with five straight first places and look like they will be hard to beat in this event. David Cheyne has also presented an impressive set of results in the Sportsboat Class at this stage in the series with four firsts and one second place. Another local boat Signet owned by Rob Armstrong was leading Sigma.

This was the first day of racing for the Squib Class and was won by Nigel Hamilton in Contender.

The sailors are now hoping for some fresher winds in the last two days of racing but will have fond memories of to-day as a new venture for Bangor Week and a definite successful addition to be continued in the future.
