Racing at the Finn Gold Cup begins tomorrow in Athens

Monday July 22nd 2002, Author: James Boyd, Location: Mediterranean
Racing in the Finn Gold Cup kicks off in Athens tomorrow (Tuesday) with all the heavyweights in the class taking part.

Fresh from his win in the Europeans will be Britain's top hope, Ben Ainslie, one of eight Brits taking part. We can except to see great things again from Ainslie as well as Andrew 'Bart' Simpson, the young Chris Brittle, last year's junior Finn world champion and Charlie Cumbley who last year was at one point tied for the lead with the eventual winner Sebastien Godefroid.

The Brits will be up against names such as former djuice crewman, Aussie Olympian and winner of last year's Australian Championships Anthony Nossiter, the Belgium hope and 2001 Gold Cup winner Sebastien Godefroid, Emilios Papathanasiou early leader at the Finn Gold Cup last year, Sydney silver medallist Luca Devoti, and Hyeres class winner Mateusz Kuszniereuicz.

The racing is being run by the Hellenic Yachting Federation in conjunction with the Olympiakos Yacht Club in Piraeus, where the racing is being held. Tomorrow there will be two races with the competition concluding on Sunday.
