No records but plenty of action for the enthusiasts at Weymouth Speed Week

Nick Beany - Speed Week 2001

The week's record went to Nick Beany on a board sailing at 35.33 knots (40.5 mph - 65.2 km/hr).

Among the more exotic craft that attended the 2001 Speed Week most suffered damage in the strong winds, some without making it to the course. This seems to be a danger to the entries, the craft are often fragile and very easily damaged on shore. As the week progressed the number of craft able to sail decreased due to damage but it does not seem to dampen the enthusiasm of the builders and they quite cheerfully pack away the pieces to take away for rebuild.

Phil Middleton and Chris Evans had their trimaran-foiler Triton travelling at speed in shallow water when they touched and flipped, wrecking the nose of the starboard hull and splitting the bow of the main hull.

This was before they were able to complete a timed run but the boat has done nearly 16 knots in previous years.

Speed Week continued......
