London 2012 day 3: Better day for the Brits
RS:X Men
Another class where today there was a two bullet winner was the RS:X competing on the Weymouth Bay West course.
There wasn’t too much to the racing today. In the first, the Netherland’s Dorian Van Rijsselberge started well, banged the left hand side to lead around the top mark ahead of Przemyslaw Miarczynski (POL) and Byron Kokalanis (GRE) with Britain’s Nick Dempsey 12th. While the leaders didn’t change with the exception of German Toni Wilhelm moving up to third, Dempsey managed to pick up pace to finish 5th.
And it was much the same in race two, with the Dutchman winning the pin and heading left at speed to round the top mark first on this occasion ahead of Wilhelm and New Zealand favourite Jon-Paul Tobin with Dempsey in 10th. The Pole climbed to third on the second beat with Dempsey up to 7th. The lead trio from race one was the lead trio in race two with Dempsey seventh.
Nick Dempsey said he was “slightly disappointed” with his day. “I sailed the races quite well, it is just I had two bad starts and on that race course you pay the price for that. Possibly I was too conservative at lining up and there were a few people going through a similar type of start and Dorian went off the pin, quite extreme, but ended up quite safe. So he ended up with the best start, fastest sailor on the water going left and was pretty hard to catch and I had to tack out in a tight lane and then it was all catch up from there. I made it difficult but I am happy with how I came back through the race, so not so bad. If you have got a good start today and went left, all the way to the layline, that was where you were going to finish.
“I am alright. It is the first day of the Games and it is nice to get started. It is not the start I wanted and it just hurts a little bit when Dorian fires off two bullets and the 5-7 is fine but it is still 10 points at the end of the day. It is not fantastic but it is not that bad.”
