O'Leary and Burrows edge ahead

Second race held at the Star World Championship in Hyeres

Switzerland's Flavio Marazzi and Enrico de Maria won the second race of the Star World Championship in Hyeres, with Robert Scheidt/Bruno Prada less than half a boat length behind. But it is the consistent Irish team of Peter O'Leary and Andrew Burrows, who lead overall.

The weather was as gusty as yesterday in Hyeres today. The race comittee chose to delay racing, in the hope that the wind would fill in and it wasn't until 14.00 that racing was attempted in 4-6 knots. After a general recall, the organisers raised the black flag for the second attempt.

With the race underway was Peter O'Leary and Andrew Burrows who led around the weather mark, followed by Hamish Pepper/Jim Turner (NZL) and Michael Hestbaeck/Claus Olesen (DEN). The Swiss rolled into the lead on the downwind leg rounding the leeward mark before ahead of the Irish and Robert Scheidt/Bruno Prada (BRA). The Brazilian defending World Champions managed to catch up and took the lead at the second upwind mark.

On the final downwind there was a battle royal between the Brazilians and Swiss with the Swiss nosing into the lead just before the line. 

A fourth place for O'Leary and Burrows, was enough to five them the lead of the Worlds just ahead of Scheidt and Prada. Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson complete the podium.

Tomorrow, the conditions are expected to abate with 15 knots and sun forecast.
