Brit teams move into pole

Morrison/Rhodes and Draper/Greenhalgh ahead at the 49er Europeans

British teams of Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes plus Chris Draper with Peter Greenhalgh turned up the speed for the first day of the finals at the 49er European Championship in Gdynia, Poland.

In the four races sailed, both teams revelled in the building breeze which started light but built to 16 knots. Morrison and Rhodes' scoring a 2-DNF-2-7 and Draper and Greenhalgh a 4-3-5-13 was enough to move the two British team ahead of third placed Danes Allan Norregaard and Peter Lang.

Yesterday’s leaders the Sibello brothers from Italy have dropped to ninth overall after OCS and a tough day on the water.

The gold and silver fleets were first off the beach in the morning to what looked to be a light air day, but with the building wind and waves, created challenging conditions. The Race Committee on the gold course made the cautious move to shift the course closer to the shore,
which actually gave more stable wind and waves for the fleet.

Racing for the finals continues tomorrow with the medal race on Saturday.
