Cherubs and Asymmetrics
Sunday October 12th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: United Kingdom
Asymmettric Class at the final fling was dominated, both in numbers and in finishing places, by Cherubs, with a third being the best result for any of the boats from other classes.one was sailed in a vaguely force 2ish breeze with a suprising amnount of waves for so little breeze (but of course not of any real size) plus an underlying swell from a quite different angle, so the routes through the lumps were really quite complicated.
Cherub Mango Jam (Gavin Sims and Simon Goodwin) led up the beat, swapping places with Cherub Halo Jones (Alex Adams and Jim Champ) and Laser 4000 4615 (Jamie and Robert Dawe ). This was something of a note of things to come as these three tended to fight out the leading places all day!
Halo Jones took the lead on the run, lost it on the next beat to Mango Jam, and then regained it again on the run and through to the finish, with Mango Jam second and Buzz Fast and Loose (Roger Eyre & Penny Eyre) taking third place on handicap.
Race two saw an early start with Halo Jones perhaps going back unnecessarily, and never really managing to reel back all the lost ground to Mango Jam. L4000 4625 led at the finish, but the leading two Cherubs corrected out in front of them.breeze increased appreciably for the third race, being just trapezing conditions up and downwind. This
was very much to Mango Jam's liking, and they took the race by a big margin both on the water and on time. Halo Jones was second on handicap and Fast and Loose third.
Next morning dawned breezy. In fact very breezy. Mango Jam revelled in the conditions and hurtled round in clouds of spray and specacular capsizes. We shall draw a veil over the race for the other starters, suffice to say that Sims and Goodwin were the sole finishers. At this point, with the wind if anything building, the race officer made a wise decision to abandon racing for all classes, leaving Mango Jam the clear winners with three firsts from the four races.
