The 72nd Warnemuende Week started in summery weather that attracted more than 220,000 visitors at its first weekend to enjoy the colourful festival parade and a high class sailing regatta.

The traditional parade especially attracted the visitors' attention with its Carnival atmosphere. "To those who want to sail, party and enjoy their time to the fullest Warnemuende Week is the right event to be at," said Minister of Transport, Construction and National Development, Volker Schlotmann, at the opening ceremony.

During the first weekend of the festival week around 700 sailors from 27 different countries have come to take part in the competition. The first winners were presented on Sunday afternoon: Knud Jansen from Kiel/Germany who scored six bullets to take the title in catamaran fleet.

In the Laser Europe Cup (4-7 July) the tension continues to get tighter. The Laser Standard class top is in Polish hands. After four races Jonasz Stelmaszyk leads, followed by his compatriots Michal Gryglewski and Wojeciech Zemke.

Jon Emmett (GBR) currently leads in the Laser Radial on five points, while the best woman in this Olympic class is Sarah Steyaert, who holds second. "We have had many disqualifications, because of several over early starts. That is why I kept my race simple and conservative. And it paid off," said Emmett. Fanni Pech from Hungary leads in the Laser 4.7 youth class on six points followed by Jolbert van Dijk (NED) and Tobias Graf (GER).

Among the sporting highlights of this year's Warnemuende Week is the Laser Europe Cup while the upcoming World Championship of the Race board class (starting on Wednesday) will be one of the main attractions as well.

"It has been a stressful weekend for the Race Committees to ensure good courses and good sailing for the participants", said Principal Race Officer Ulrich Finckh. "At the beginning the situation on Saturday was a little bit critical as we were ready to have serious thunderstorms that luckily did not reach us. We are in the schedule and could start as many races as intended."
