Big breeze on last day

The Barcelona Olympic Week has come to a close with spectacular racing on the final day

Following a great week of sailing it was a spectacular final day at the Pharo Regatta Barcelona Olympic Sailing Week, with Spanish victories in the Laser and Laser Radial classes. The wind was blowing from the northeast at 20 knots for the beginning of the day increasing to 25 knots by late afternoon. Two meter waves made the conditions particularly difficult throughout the day.

In the Laser class Javier Hernandez secured overall victory following a second place in the final Medal Race. Hernandez won with a ten point difference over second placed winner of the Medal Race, Mike Bullot. Gustavo Lima who started the regatta with such promise eventually lost out to the Spanish and the Kiwis finishing third, tied to points with Bullot.

In the Laser Radial Lucia Reyes, who had relinquished the overall lead the previous day had a solid Medal Race, finishing fourth. This, in conjunction with the eighth position Medal Race finish from overnight leader, Gintare Volungeviciute, handed victory to Reyes by three points. The podium was rounded out by third placed Spanish sailor, Susana Romero.

In women's 470 class victory went to the Japanese team of Ai Kondo and Naoko Kamata. In a moment of particular excitement third place went to Adi Gilboa and Vered Bousika following a successful request for redress from the Swiss team of Emmanuelle Rol and Anne-Sophie Thilo still left them in third overall. Second place went to Argentineans, Fernanda Sesto and Consuelo Monsegur.

In the men's 470 fleet, the Greek crews demonstrated great potential. Victory for Kambouridis and Orologas in the Medal Race secured them first position overall while another Greek team, Kosmatopoulos and Papadopoulos took third. Sandwiched between these two Greek teams was the Austrian pairing of Schmid and Reichstaedter

The Pharo Regatta has been the first qualifying regatta for Spanish Pre-Olympic selection 2007 in the Laser, Laser Radial, Men's and Women's 470.
