400,000 turn up

More than 2,600 sailors in 32 classes from record breaking 37 nations sail in this year’s Travemünde Week. The first weekend of the 117th edition of the big German sailing week saw 19 classes at the start and a lot of exciting competition on the water. More than 400,000 people came to visit the Travemünde Week on the first three days to enjoy the entertainment program and watch the sailing action.
The wind conditions turned out to be better than expected. Threatening thunderstorms pulled off in the morning and gave way to a changing, but sufficient breeze. The German Tornado sailors were not happy at all about their first results. “It was a disaster”, said Roland Gaebler, bronze medal winner in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. “We missed the important wind shifts today”, the 41 year old sailor tried to find an answer for his 26th place after two races.
The German Open in the Olympic Neil Pryde RS:X class ended with the victory of Richard Stauffacher from Switzerland followed by Thomas Kargl (Austria). The leaders packed their bags for the World Championship at Lake Garda. Best woman was Germanys Romy Kinzl (6th).
In the International 14 class the overall victory went to the dominating team of Peter and Björn Frasch. The crew from Germany scored seven firsts in nine races. The German Cup in the Europe class was won by local hero Svenja Puls from the Lübeck Yacht Club, scoring four wins in five races. “It is a great honour to win the Travemünde Week this year”, said the former Vice-Champion of the Junior Worlds.
