The second Fat Face RS Vareo event of the season got underway at Rutland SC with light winds.

Tim Greenwood led to the windward mark in race one, with Jamie Morgan and Jim Hood follwoing closely. After a big hole at the second mark, it was a closely fought downwind leg with Greenwood just holding off Morgan and Hood to the finish.

The second race started with Greenwood pulling out a sizeable lead, followed once again by Morgan and Hood. Greenwood pulled out a lead of a whole leg over second placed Nicholas Crickmore and Jim Hood.

Race three and this time Morgan got a great start followed by Greenwood and Hood. Over the next lap Greenwood overhauled Morgan and took the lead with Hood coming in behind the youngsters.

The second day brought even lighter winds and cloud.

Race four got underway with Greenwood leading Morgan and Hood. After two laps Greenwood thought it was the end of the race so sailed off to the finish whilst the rest of the fleet sailed the third lap – with Morgan winning, followed closely by Hood and Geoff Shaw.

The wind died for race five, Greenwood lead followed by Morgan. The light-weights pulled away and after two laps the race was shortened.

For the final race the wind picked up to a nice force three to four and this time it was Hood to lead, followed by Morgan and Greenwood. By the lee-ward mark it was Greenwood followed by Morgan and Hood, with Morgan going past Greenwood on the next beat. After a very close downwind leg between Morgan and Greenwood, Morgan finished, closely followed by Greenwood and Hood.

Also at Rutland Sailing Club for the weekend were the RS600 fleet. Eight boats arrived to be greeted with light winds forecast for the weekend. Racing on the weekend saw new faces to go with the few regulars.

Race one got off to a steady start with some marginal trapeezing. Jamie Mawson took the lead but the other boats stayed close behind. There was regular place changing throughout the race with second and third places being anybody’s. By the end of the race there was less than a minute between second and last places. Race two and three followed the same pattern with Jamie getting two more bullets.

On day two, races four and five took the same format as the day before, with race five being cut short after one lap as the wind died completely. After a short squall, the wind settled to a nice force three and provided the most exciting race of the weekend and again there was some close racing throughout the fleet. No-one was left on their own. Jamie Mawson won the weekend with his six shooter closely followed by James Sainsbury and Ken Potts. The merit award went to Mark Duckworth in fifth.
