Emmett - the champ
Saturday August 7th 2004, Author: Jon Emmett, Location: United Kingdom
Mounts Bay Sailing Club held a predominantly light air championship for 130 Radials over 1-6 August. Race office Ken Falcon did an excellent job of getting in six races, in very difficult conditions.
Day one belonged to Jon Emmett. The first race he led around the top mark and pulled away from the fleet which was led by Matt Findley. As the order of the fleet settled, so did the fog, making it impossible to see the marks. Emmett got lost and the leaders sailed past the mark, which was found by Richard King who took the race which was subsequently abandoned after protest.
Race two and Emmett started on port and easily crossed the fleet and led until the finishing gun. New comers to the fleet, Kim Ross and Lindsay Doig, enjoyed the conditions to finish second and third in what shifted to be a one sided race track. Another protest went in, but the results of the race stood.
Six time National champion Steve Cockerill made his mark winning day three (there was no sailing on day two) with a convincing win. Colette Blair sailed extremely well, leading the race for the first lap but could not hold off Cockerill and Emmett who grabbed first and second respectively.
The penultimate day belonged to Ben Paton and moved him up to second overall, tied on points with Blair. Race four was led from start to finish by Paton who made an excellent start at the port end and comfortably crossed the fleet, never to be headed. Emmett pulled through the fleet, but tactical sailing by Max Holloway deigned him second place in tricky conditions.
Cockerill took another race win with race five when he worked the left hand side of the run, passing the initial leader Paton who went right down the run and got forced off left up the next beat. Cockerill worked right, extended his lead and James Tonkin who followed Cockerill managed to sneak into second.
Paul Cox won the final race of the day, holding off a determined challenge from the ever improving Oren Richards. Paton who revelled in the light conditions followed this up with another third place.
Matt Findley won the final race. Judging the lay line perfectly on the first beat he passed the early leaders who overstood. Only one race was sailed on the last day due to the time limit. Although another race was started, the whole fleet was over the line and there was not enough time for a restart. As a result the results remained largely unchanged, apart from Blair who slipped at the last. A third place confirmed Paton’s runner up spot and second for Holloway keeping him in fourth from Cockerill who was the only person to win more than one race. Despite a late charge by Paton it was Emmett, who never finished outside the top six, who proved that it takes consistency to win a championship.
