Rogers and Glanfield in the money

It was Sprint Cup day for the International 470 in Warnemunde today.
Seven of the top 470 Teams in the World of double handed dinghy sailing took to the water in a 3 race, no drop format with 5000 euro prize money on the line. Ideal conditions met the 4 Men’s and 3 Women’s teams that had qualified and been invited based on their World Championship placing.
Reigning Sprint Cup Champions Johan Moland & Martin Anderson of Sweden made it look like it would be repeat win of last year by taking out the 1st heat in 12-15 knots. With the female Israeli team of Nike Kornecki & Vered Bouskila just edged out into third by Nick Roger & Joe Glanfield.
The second heat was tighter, with French World Champion Gildas Phillippe & Nic Le Berre and the Israeli Women duelling around the course until with 30 metres before the down wind finish, Gildas fouled the Starboard Israeli’s and the On-water Umpires awarded a penalty against the French that also let British Champions Rogers/Glanfield into 2nd and first heat winners Moland/Anderson into third.
That left 3 teams on 4 points each; Kornecki & Bouskila of Israel, Rogers & Glanfield of Great Britain and Moland & Anderson of Sweden. The start was very even with the British forced to tack off the windward quarter of the Swedish World Champion Women and look for more breeze on the righthand side of the course. They found it and rounded the windward mark in winning position leaving the Swedish Moland and Israeli Kornecki fignting it out for the minor places.
The British defended their lead well down the two reaches and covered the fleet up the last work before rounding the final windward for the down wind finish with a 15 second lead.
Moland covered the Isreali’s into 5th Place and secured a second place overall and ensuring the Israeli team’s Third overall.
Pro-Active TV covered the event that will be seen on Watersports World and Eurosport later in the year.
In the European Championship, the Final race for qualification took place earlier in the day. The blue Men’s group requiring just 1 race to complete the required 5 races.
Four major surprises in the make up of the Gold and Silver Fleets with reigning World Men’s Champion Nathan Wilmot not competing in the Qualification suffering from a strained back and therefore relegated to Silver Fleet and Local Champions Lucas Zellmer & Felix Krabbe failing to make Gold Fleet. Same was the fate for past World Champion Frenchman Gildas Phillippe & Nic Le Berre as well as NewZealand’s Olympic rep Andrew Brown.
Finals start Monday for Men’s gold and continue for the Women’s fleet.
