Thunderstorms at Niners

Big shifts make for tricky racing in Plymouth

Wednesday August 6th 2003, Author: Ovingtons, Location: United Kingdom
Day 2, 5th Aug.

Plymouth must have been the only place in the UK today where sailing was delayed because of too much wind After a 3 hour postponement and a thunderstorm the 29er and 49er fleets were sent out into a dying and very shifty breeze. It was consistency and nerves that paid with some real big place changes and shifts during the races.

In the 29ers 4 races were held, Tristen Jaques and Alan Sign excelled in the shifty and moderate winds and now have a healthy lead. Ian Martin - last years Champion helm is back after a knee operation with Jonny Frazer on the wire. They have shown they still have the touch and are in second place.

The 49ers race course took longer to settle down while the wind moved to the South, two races were held and once again it was consistency that ruled the day. Dalton Borgan & Zach Maxam from the USA have a 2 point lead over Ben Mcgrane & Jonny Clegg in second and a big cushion on third place James Macintosh & Phil Kennard. Stevie Morrison & Ben Rhodes had a good day but are still carrying an OCS.

The 59ers start racing on Wednesday.
