However a second set of Doldrums looks set to stall the Mini Transat's front runners

After a weekend flailing about in the Doldrums, so yesterday the lead Protos in the Charente Maritime-Bahia Transat 6.50 (Mini Transat) were able to turn their bows to the southwest and are now making good progress towards Brazil and the finish line at Salvador de Bahia, now 1144 miles away for leader David Raison on Team Work Evolution. The furthest south are at present sailing into better breeze as the southeasterly trades build and with that the concertina has been expanding - at this morning's sched, Raison is now 15 miles ahead of second placed Thomas Normand on Financiere de l'Echiquier and 45 in front of Bertrand Delesne's Zone Large in third. While Antoine Rioux on Festival des Pains is holding fourth out to the west, then there is an increasingly substantial gap back to those chasing, with fifth placed Lucas Montagne on ONG Conseil now 120 miles behind the leader as he and the chasing pack behind him still try to extricate themselves from the lighter winds at 6°N.

In the Series class, 179 miles back from the lead Proto, Benoit Mariette on Odalys Vacances continues to hold pole, but in the midst of the chasing pack in the Protos, has yet to get into the trades fully. However averaging 4-5 knots overnight the Series leaders are making better progress than the boats further back up the race track which have only managed 1-3 knots overnight. The competition in the Series class remains tight with 7.5 miles separating the top three boats but there are still some tactics to play out with Renaud Mary on www.runo.fr still on a flier out to the west and another group led by Fabrice Sorin on Cartoffset out to the east. Britain's Pip Hare on The Potting Shed has done well over the last 24 hours and pulled herself back up to 19th place, 139 miles astern of Mariette. She is in the second wave of series boat.

Unfortunately they are not out of the woods yet with a fresh set of Doldrums setting up just north of the Equator over the next 24-48 hours. It is posisble that the Proto frontrunners may get pass this before the door closes.
