Scandinavian blue ribbon
The Samsung Challenge is a new speed record from Ystad in the south of Sweden and Haparanda in the north; a classic 712 mile long course founded by the magazine Båttnytt which will become Scandinavia's equivalent of the Blue Ribbon. It has been set up between Samsung Sweden and Klabbe Nylöf's company Whyshore Yachting and Marketing and ex-Volvo Ocean Race sailor Nylöf will be making an attempt on this during the summer doublehanded aboard his ORMA 60 trimaran.
”We look forward to nail a record on the route Ystad to Haparanda in Båtnytt’s contest The Blue Ribbon. The east coast of Sweden offers a wide variety of weather conditions. If we get the right wind conditions and manage to handle the boat on a crew of two, the Samsung Challenge trimaran has a good chance to sail this stretch in 24 hours with an average speed of 30 knots. It’s a tough reach and a great challenge!” says Nylöf.
To date Nylöf's ORMA 60 has recorded an impressive top speed of 43.2 knots. But seeing as the present ORMA 60 24 hour record (fully crewed) stands at 624 miles, managing this passage in 24 hours will be big ask.
