VIDEO: Day out on the Groupama VO70

Franck Cammas' team go yachting in Lanzarote

Wednesday January 19th 2011, Author: James Boyd, Location: Spain

Any excuse to get out of London Boat Show... Last Friday down in Lanzarote we had the opportunity to go yachting with Franck Cammas and his Volvo Ocean Race team on their trial horse - the former Ericsson 4, winner of the last fully crewed round the world race.

That day on board the crew included of course Cammas himself, still basking in his Route du Rhum win less than two months ago, while on mainsheet was either former Solitaire du Figaro winner Charles Caudrelier or ex-Figaro sailor and match racer Erwan Israel. A surprise face on board was Seb Josse, former ABN AMRO Two skipper and two time Vendee Globe sailor.

A strong posse of Swedes is in the team, including Volvo Ocean Race veteran Magnus Woxen, soon to set out on his fifth lap following on from Swedish Match, SEB, Ericsson and Ericsson 3. In addition to Woxen other Swedes on the sailing team are Martin Strömberg and Martin Krite, both of whom did the last VOR on board Ericsson 3. After very nearly getting away with a Kiwi-free team, one has slipped on board in the form of bowman Brad Marsh, who went around on the last race as part of Ericssion Racing Team's shore team.

Notable absentees included Cammas' no2, Damian Foxall who is trimmer/helmsman and crew boss on board, former Belgacom ORMA 60 skipper Jean-Luc Nelias who is navigator and Australia ex-Green Dragon crewman Phil Harmer, off being a supportive new father (congratulations both of you).
