Geronimo going well but for how long

Weather situation ahead looks terrible

Saturday April 24th 2004, Author: James Boyd, Location: Transoceanic
Day 58
Position at 2317GMT: 25°15N 36°00W
24 hour run: 390.5nm
Average speed: 16.30 knots

On the day Steve Fossett and the crew of Cheyenne were preparing themselves to cross the finish line of their record breaking non-stop around the world voyage, Olivier de Kersauson and Geronimo's crew still have a long way to go before they are in a similar fortunately situation. As the crow flies they are more than 1,800 miles behind Cheyenne's end of day 58 position and with the Azores high to contend with shortly they will be faced with many more miles than just this to sail.

With two days of respectible runs and at least one more ahead of them as they sail up through the northeasterly trades, Geronimo have extended on Orange's 2002 time but the forecast ahead could not be worse for them the Azores high leaving little opportunity to be skirted to the west and it looking increasingly like de Kersauson will have to bite the bullet and continue upwind to get home, not a record breaking move by any stretch of the imagination.
