The Tour de France a la Voile, otherwise known as the Tour Voile, sets sail from Dunkirk-Dunes de Flander on 26 June.
This, the 26th running of the race, will continue the tradition of the event - 500 crews, the highest competition in one design Mumm 30s. Once again the fleet of 39 boats is divided into three classes - students, amateurs and professions - and has attracted some of the top names from the America's Cup, Vendee Globe, The Race, Olympics, etc.
Last year the race went to the wire between Pierre-Loïc Berthet's Nantes/Saint-Nazaire Jimmy Pahun's Region ile de France, Berthet eventually pipping Pahun to the post by 1.5 points. This battle looks set to resume this year, with Pahun looking to set the record straight. Sailing with Pahun again will be Isabelle Autissier and Figaro sailor/470 champion Benoit Petit.
The Italian team on Joe Fly, led by Federico Michetti on Joe Fly will also be strong contenders. Vasco Vascotto will be among the crew.
Among the overseas teams with potential are Tour Voile stalwarts Ville de Genève-Carrefour Prévention and a new Aussie team in Southern Sun TEAM Australia, led by Michael Smith, taking time out from sailing his 12m yachts aroung Melbourne. At present there are no British teams entered.
In the fleet are a great many Figaro sailors including last year's Solitaire du Figaro winner Kito de Pavant, Erwan Tabarly, Morgan Riou and Philippe Vicariot. These last three will be sailing occasionally on the Thalès boat registered in the Amateur division.
Thanks to the involvement of radio station RTL2, a concert will be organised in each of the race's 13 stopovers during which there will be much more going on ashore.
