In the past criticisms have been levelled against
Cheyenne over being too heavy and too powerful, but her performance over the last week have been astonishing even for weathered maxi-multihull speed record pundits.
In the 24 hours leading up to 0505 this morning, Steve Fossett's maxi catamaran notched up 557 miles, her seventh consecutive day run exceeding 500 miles. Their lead over Orange's 2002 record is now in the order of 2,200 miles (almost five days ahead) and she is more than 1,100 mile ahead of Geronimo's 'fast' Southern Ocean passage from 2003.
With the next Southern Ocean depression trucking across at around 60degS Cheyenne is heading north from their present latitude of 51degS to remain in the strong westerly air stream and avoid falling into the light winds preceeding the depression.
