Awkward cross seas
Tuesday December 16th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: Transoceanic
Day 23:
Position at 05:58: 40deg 34.68'S 55deg 14.00'E
Distance from start: 9220.34 miles
Speed/course: 20.84 Nds / 93°
3350 miles ahead of the record
Another blistering day for Francis Joyon who in the 24 hours up until 6am this morning had sailed another 400 miles across the Southern Ocean part of the Indian Ocean.
Conditions for Joyon look to be fairly established for the next couple of days ahead as he rides the 20 knot southwesterlies to the south east of a high pressure system centred at 38S 40E and which is tracking east.
With a depression to his southeast Joyon says that he is currently sailing in an awkward conditions as the wind is from the south but the swell is still from the north.
At the time of his call this morning Joyon was still making 23-25 knots though...
He seems to be enjoying it: "I helm for 8 or 9 hours per day, because I have realised that compared to the pilot, I am 5 knots faster!"
Joyon says he is not a big sleeper and has been averaging 4 hours every 24.
