SP Systems announce off the shelf engineering package

With the Volvo Ocean Race 2005 advancing at a quickening pace, the race is on for designers, builders and engineers alike to produce the ultimate Volvo Open 70. A successful, performance racing boat of this calibre usually takes 9 months to develop and complete from start to finish, not including essential sea trials, so the syndicates need to finalise specifications as soon as possible. In response to this race against the clock, SP, specialist in composite technology, has produced an entirely unique starter package that aims to help syndicates and their builders incorporate composite solutions that are fully optimised to the new Volvo Open 70 Rule.

The package originates from a generic Volvo Open 70 design that was commissioned by SP. Based on vast research that would normally be done over a longer period of time than is currently available for syndicates, it provides an extremely good starting point from which individual designs can be developed and optimisied, and allows weight and cost estimates to be made.

SP’s package potentially reduces time through efficient engineering and the effective application of specialist composite materials, and therefore should prove invaluable to syndicates working to tight time schedules.

SP’s Volvo Open 70 engineering package comprises of the following:

- Detailed typed specification for planning and costing purposes. Attached is the list of components which have been studied and from which laminates have been derived
- Structural mass estimate for each of the above items, and an overall list of
materials required
- Structural general arrangement drawing
- Optimised hull shell laminate drawing
- Deck laminate drawing including reinforcements

The package is available from SP at a cost of £900.00 (plus VAT).
