Geronimo drops behind

Another slow day for French maxi-tri

Tuesday March 23rd 2004, Author: James Boyd, Location: Transoceanic
Day 26
Position at 2317GMT: 49°21S 112°35E
24 hour run: 350miles
Average speed: 14.6 knots

Geronimo has been making slow progress to the longitude of Cape Leeuwin, Australia's southwesternmost tip, over the past 48 hours as the weather in the Indian Ocean plays pinball with her and it looks like Steve Fossett's Cheyenne will keep the record for this passage.

At present the weather charts indicate that Geronimo is currently sailing upwind to the south of a low pressure system. Fortunately this position should change later this afternoon, to the relief of the crew, and she will be back in the strong westerly airflow in a better position to catch up with Cheyenne's time.

Geronimo is now in the order of 370 miles astern of Cheyenne's relative end of day 26 position. However she is in good shape compared to Orange's 2002 record setting voyage - she is currently over 1,700 miles ahead of her.
