Bubb leads solo fleet

As end draws nigh for first leg of Mini class' Transgascogne to Gijon in north Spain

Following their departure from Port Bourgenay on Sunday it is currently hard to tell who is winning the Transgascogne race for the 100 odd Minis taking part as they make for the Gijon stopover in northern Spain. At the 1700 radio check-in only 34 boats responded.

Assuming this is accurate then currently British sailor Nick Bubb on his Magnen-designed Kenmore/JMST is leading the singlehanded division with 105 miles to go, with Spaniards Jaime Mumbru on Port de Barcelona and of Tanguy de Lamotte on SET Environnement five and six miles astern of the British boat respectively.

The fleet is currently spread out over 50 miles and the first boats are expected to arrive today (Wednesday) although when is equally hard to predict: the boat are sailing into the centre of a high pressure system and are likely to be becalmed...
