Peter Sutton reports from on board second-placed Zana

Sunday December 28th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: Australasia
This morning we spoke to Peter Sutton on board Zana:

"We are about two miles away from Skandia maybe a little less," commented Sutton. "Both boats are on the wind in a fresh southerly and reasonable seas. Through the night it was the same - they’ve been just ahead of us all the time and we’ve been looking for an opportunity to pass them but they have matched us tack for tack. We have a fresh southerly probably around 20-25 knots. It is on the wind and we are coming towards Tasman Island."

Sutton wouldn't commit to an ETA in Hobart, but said it was likely to be sometime during the night. Part of this was due to the forecast indicating that the wind would go lighter.

"We're 35 miles offshore. We are heading in towards Cape Forestier [roughly half way down the east coast of Tasmania] on port tack trying to line up for Tasman Island."

Throughout the night the crew have been responsible to changes in the wind strength and Sutton said they had been making constant sail changes - reef in, reef out. There had been no breakage on board.
