Getting out of jail

Geronimo continues to make slow progress

Friday April 16th 2004, Author: James Boyd, Location: Transoceanic
Day 50
Position at 2317GMT: 20°47S 38°57W
24 hour run: 252.33 miles
Average speed: 10.51 knots

If Geronimo continues on her present course they will soon end up on the beach in Brazil (but then there are worse places to be...) At present the wind is still in the northeast and doesn't look set to veer any further around to the east until last this afternoon.

Meanwhile their virtual war with Cheyenne and Orange continues. The former they are losing badly now. Through day 49 and 50 Cheyenne was out of dodge and hightailing it north about to cross the Equator. Her end of day 50 position is some 1,300 miles further up the course. To break Cheyenne's record Olivier de Kersauson and his crew need to make around 536 miles per day or average 22.3 knots from here until the finish, which considering they have sailed less than half this pace for the last three days we would predict is unlikely to happen.

However the good news is that Geronimo is still some 440 or so miles ahead of Orange's relative position from 2002.
