Slow day for Cheyenne off Rio and prospects not good for the next 24 hours

Wednesday March 24th 2004, Author: James Boyd, Location: Transoceanic

Day 46
Position at 0510GMT: 24deg 39.666S 36deg 37.641W
Course/speed: 023deg/8.2 knots
TWS/TWA: 7.0 knots/264deg

Currently to the ESE of Rio de Janeiro, Cheyenne and her crew have had a frustrating day 46 as they have been forced to head east to find new wind. The position updates from yesterday afternoon tell all with headings of 106 and 139deg (the ideal course is around 010deg) in a true wind speed of 6 of 9 knots. The big catamaran does not like such light conditions and the crew are desperately attempting to find the prevailing northeasterly Trades that lie to the east. These may be on the nose, but at least there is should be some pressure here. However it may still be 24 hours before the crew find the new breeze.

With this slow day for Cheyenne, Orange's end of day 46 position on their 2002 record attempt is now down to 911 miles astern of them and will be perplexing the crew greatly.
