Veolia Oceans in the big apple

Alexia Barrier and the crew of Bostik reach New York

Monday July 21st 2008, Author: Clementine Chaignaud, Location: United Kingdom
Alexia Barrier (France), Phil Paxton (Canada) and Yann Clavier (France) arrived in New York safely from the crosing of the North Atlantic onboard Bostik, the first of the Veolia Oceans® one designs for the SolOceans round the world race. The boat is now berthed in North Cove Marina on the Hudson River, on Manhattan.

Bostik and her crew entered the Ambrose Channel today at 10.00am local time havin spent 15 days 30 minutes crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The North Atlantic weather on th way across included three depressions in a row at the start of the 3.100 nautical miles crossing. However the Veolia Oceans One Design passed through unscathed.

Comparing the crossing to those of the boats competing in the recent Artemis Transat Bostik's route was nearly identical and her performance was close to that of the singlehanded IMOCA 60s - at a theoretical average soeed of 8.60 knots ( Roxy - 8.04 knots, Safran - 8.32 knots or Generali - 9.10 knots) In comparison with the course really sailed between France and United States (3.595 nautical miles), the real average of Bostik is 9.97 knots.

After more than a week dedicated to daily sailing sessions with American media and skippers as well as with VIP guests, Bostik will head back across the Atlantic bound for Cherbourg on Wednesday 30 July with a crew comprising Charles Caudrelier and Yann Clavier.
