Organisers of the Portimão Global Ocean Race today announced that they have re-scheduled the start of Leg 2, Cape Town, South Africa to Wellington, New Zealand. The new start date will be Saturday, 13 December.

“In conjunction with our hosts, The Royal Cape Yacht Club, we have made this decision in order to allow our entries an extra six days here in Cape Town to prepare for the rigours of Leg 2 which will take them into the Southern Ocean,” said Race Director, Josh Hall. “In keeping with our fundamental philosophies of safety first and with this being a competitor-driven event, we canvassed all of our skippers before making a decision and their response was a unanimous agreement.

"Every day counts when preparing for the Big South and we have been able to grant the skippers some extra time. We want them and their boats to be in great shape when they leave Cape Town and this is such a fabulous place to do just that,” he continued.

Precise start details will be announced in due course
