In the early hours of this morning, Giovanni Soldini and Karine Fauconnier crossed the finish line of the Class 40's Les Sables-Horta-Les Sables race to claim their second leg win and overall victory.
Soldini's Telecom Italia arrived under large spinnaker at 01:41:32 this morning, considerably later than expected as the wind had dropped more than was forecast. Right from the start the Franco-Italian pair of former ORMA 60 skippers were gunning hard, starting under full main and solent when the majority had a reef in and their staysail up. Pushing hard they dug north and were first to emerge from the high pressure, prior to starting the downwind sledge ride home. With the wind dying towards the finish, so in the final day at sea both CG Mer and Tzu-Hang managed to close in, with the former finishing less than two hours astern. Nico Brennan and Alex Alley on board Palanad II were fourth home and are likely to take third overall with CG Mer second having also finished ahead of them on leg 1. |
