La Solitaire du Figaro is in its final throws with everything still to play for on this final leg from Dingle, southern Ireland, across the Celtic Sea, up along the south coast of the UK, around Needles Fairway Buoy and across the Channel to the finish in Dieppe.
As ever the Solitaire du Figaro is scored on the old fashioned system of accumulated elapsed time rather than points scored on each leg, so while Jeremie Beyou and his new sponsor Bernard Paoli won the second and third legs, it is Nicolas Lunven who holds the overall lead after three legs. However there remains all to play for with just one hour separating the first 15 boats in the overall results and the toughest leg of the race ahead of the competitors.
Having left Dingle yesterday, so the boats are currently mid-way across the Celtic Sea bound for Land's End. They will be getting sleep in the bag ready for the dealing with the complexities of the south coast of the UK and all the tidal gates competitors in the Rolex Fastnet Race enjoyed last week heading in the opposite direction. Any one in the UK with waterborne transport has the opportunity to see the Figaro fleet as they round Needles fairway buoy (whenever that might be). We will provide an update on their ETA there in due course.
At present the top eight boats are separated by less than a mile, with Fred Duthil leading, but with some big names up there nipping at his heels, including Michel Desjoyeaux, fellow IMOCA 60 skipper Armel le Cleac'h and past winner Charles Caudrelier. And Nigel King is up to 11th just 1.4 miles from the leader!
Weatherwise, the situation remains remarkably unchanged from last week, with the northeast corner of the Azores high encroaching on the race course and according to our PredictWind forecast, this will see the wind backing from the northwest to the south or SSW and lightening over the course of today. Tomorrow the wind is forecast to back further around to the northeast and lighten - so on the nose going up the Channel, adding to the excitment. |
