Down to the wire in the amateur and student divisions as Tour Voile winds up in Marseille after a month of racing

Saturday July 28th 2007, Author: Anatole Lucet, Location: United Kingdom
After one month of racing around the French and Spanish coastlines so Fabien Henry and his crew on Toulon Provence Méditerranée – COYCHyères have won the 2007 Tour de France a la Voile. Tahiti et ses Iles (Teva Plichart) came second overall ahead of last year’s winner, Ile de France (Victor Lanier, Nicolas Pauchet). Val-Thorens (Lucas Millieret) finished first in the amateur class and Les Saisies – INSA (Sylvain Leboeuf) was winner in the student division.

The Tour de France a la Voile concluded this morning in Marseille, the 30 crews welcomed home with greetings from a large assembled crowd back at the Old Port. Although the winner of 2005, Toulon Provence Méditerranée – COYCHyères knew yesterday that they would win the race, the first places in the Amateur and Student class were only decided in the final race, with everything hanging on the fina leg from the Frioul to the Château d'If.

Val-Thorens (Lucas Millieret) quickly managed to get ahead of the other competitors. The amateur crew remained cautious and kept an eye on their closest adversary Bred (Sylvain Chtounder). However Bred was penalised for touching a buoy and was later dropped to 21st instead of seventh. Therefore Ville du Port – Région Réunion (Marc Guessard, Gabriel Jean-Albert) won ahead of Tahiti et ses Iles and Val-Thorens.

It remained close for the remaining places on the podium with the new Tahiti team of Teva Plichart second in the overall results ahead of last year's winner, Ile de France. They were just 0.25 points apart yesterday ( Ile de France on 1012.5 points), but the Tahitians won a tough duel in the last leg arriving two places ahead to secure victory. As far as the locals were concerned, Elcimaï – Ville de Marseille (Dimitri Deruelle) failed to get onto the podium this year even though they were second for three years in a row previously.

In the amateur class, Val-Thorens remained in the first place ahead of Bred and Saint-Malo Purflo Team SNBSM (Pierre Hingant, François Lebourdais). Caisse d’Epargne – HEC – Ecole Navale (Hervé Gautier) regain first place, so Les Saisies – INSA is now this year’s winner of the student classes. Brest-Grandes Ecoles ENSIETA ESC (Loïc Le Garrec) ranked third.

From the first to the last, the thirty competitors of the Tour de France Sailing Race 2007 navigated over 900 nautical miles along the French coast during 30 days. A big bravo to them for completing this extraordinary adventure!
