Historic moment

It perhaps won't be quite the same occasion as when he rolled into Falmouth at the end of the Sunday Times Golden Globe, when he became the first man to sail non-stop (singlehanded or otherwise) around the world back in 1969, but this Saturday will see Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and his Open 60 Saga Insurance sail back into the UK fresh from the finish of the Velux 5 Oceans.
Some 40 years after his first pioneering solo lap of the globe, Sir Robin finished the Velux 5 Oceans in fourth place and at 68 years old is the oldest person ever to have completed the solo round the world race.
Sir Robin and Saga Insurance will be escorted back from the Needles by the Clipper Round the World Racing fleet, a Royal Navy escort to Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth. Here he will be greeted by friend Roger Taylor from Queen, his daughter Sara Hales and his five grandchildren.
Schedule:
07.30 - Saga Insurance will arrive at the Needles
09.30 – 10.00 - Sir Robin will be off Cowes, Isle of Wight for 11 gun salute from Royal Yacht Squadron
11.30 - Sir Robin arrives at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour
12.00 - Sir Robin passes Portsmouth Round Tower
12.30 - Sir Robin and SAGA Insurance to arrive at the dockside at Gunwharf Quays
